Cover Versions
After my post on music in pubs I was talking to an old friend who had read the post and she reminded me how popular cover versions of songs taken from musicals have been with artists and groups. Of course, it then became a competition to see who could remember the most and name some well-known ones. I am afraid I was not very successful, as her encyclopaedic knowledge came up with some obscure ones. But I did manage a decent list of my own, although a fairly predictable one, so here it is:
- 'Til There Was You, from (of course) Music Man, covered by The Beatles.
- 'You'll Never Walk Alone', from Carousel, covered by Gerry and the Pacemakers (and most of the football supporters of England).
- 'Secret Love'. from Calamity Jane, covered by Kathy Kirby (whatever happened to her?).
- 'Mack the Knife', from Threepenny Opera, covered by Bobby Darin (I could get a big score of covers from Bobby Darin because he also did a cover of 'Mame' and some others if I recall correctly. Of course he has had a bit of a revival recently with that very good film biography with Kevin Spacey in, Beyond The Sea.)
- 'Don't Rain On My Parade', from Funny Girl, covered by Diana Ross.
- P J Proby's Somewhere from West Side Story. Do you remember him? He was always splitting his trousers in the 60's.
- 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina', from Evita, now I thought of the cover by Shirley Bassey, but my friend had heard one version done by the Carpenters (she's such a show off!).
- 'My Favourite Things', from The Sound of Music, covered by John Coltrane (and now a jazz standard!). I was very pleased with myself at getting this in my list but my friend was able to trump this ace with a version of the same song done by Bjork, of all people!
That was my list and my friend had others, so see if you can match her and let me know of any other songs from musicals that have been covered as stand-alone songs by an artist or group. Anyone who can come up with a cover version of a song from a musical done by Britney Spears or 50 Cent gets a special prize!

Hi
One song I remember is from a show called the Fantasticks it is called 'Try To Remember'. I think a lot of people have recorded this one but I remember one by Gladys Knight in the 70's.
