Spammed-a-lot

Over the last couple of weeks I seem to have been affected by more ’spam’ comments than normal getting through the filtering software that is on the WordPress blogs. Most are routinely trapped before they get on the blog but a few more than usual have got through.

It’s the usual stuff. Machine generated and full of links to sad sites that offer a personal service. Thanking me in pidgin English for providing a great site before leaving links to sites no one in their right mind would visit. When I look at the total number of spam comments the filtering software has trapped compared with how few actually get through I can see I am reasonably protected and don’t have to deal with the majority of spam comments that are left. But it is still a pain having to spend time deleting the ones that get through.

When I first started this blog I set the ability to comment quite restrictively but then decided to allow anyone to comment. I get few enough comments anyway so it turned out not to be a problem. I’d like to keep it that way. Why stop people from commenting on the daily drivel of a bloke who enjoys musicals and musical theatre. But if the spam continues to be a nuisance I may have to think again and decide to be more restrictive. If it suddenly becomes more difficult to comment, my apologies (to the eight or nine who comment regularly).

  1. I’ve noticed a similar problem over on my blog. I sometimes wonder how many ‘visits’ are actually just spam comment robot things. Quite a range of personal services is offered, to be fair, but I’m certainly not following the links and like to kill the comments as quickly as possible so that nobody else will.

  2. Looking at my statistics, they don’t seem to affect them. I seem to get spam comments on posts from months ago and that post does not seem to show up on that day’s statistics. I suppose the people who send them are constantly finding new ways of doing it which is perhaps why we have noticed more recently. They annoy me because I take it as a poor reflection on my blog that they are on there.

I don’t really get comments on my blog site, so I don’t really get the spam problem. Swings and roundabouts I guess! :o (

  4. Mark, it was quite some time before I got comments. In fact I got spam before I got real comments!
